This altar gives off a rank, bloody smell and is drenched with deep red blood. You can even see chunks of meat, guts, hearts, and livers all lying on the altar. A deep voice in your heart tells you to sacrifice an innocent to the Altar of Blood... as you do, you feel the energy of the altar beginning to flow into your body.

Attribute: UNIQUE PERMANENT
Charge Turn: 0

Effects

  • Extra income of 2,500 m.p. This means extra 5,000 mana on turns that you mana charge.
  • Takes 5000 population per turn, not shown in Status Report.
    • The Altar does not disappear if you run out of population.
    • The income and the upkeep are not related. If you have 0 pop, you still get the m.p. each turn. (Source: Trojan and Carltsai)
  • It used to give 5,000 extra m.p., and on Arch it still does. (Source: Veldrin)

Usage

  • Icon VERDANT.gif and Icon ASCENDANT.gif mages love Altar of Blood.
  • Icon PHANTASM.gif mages will need to avoid ripper- and undead- heavy stacking.
  • Icon NETHER.gif mages should consider selling altar. Otherwise they'll have to stack heavy amounts of red and blue units, which is inefficient.
  • Icon ERADICATION.gif Dragons.
  • Beware of getting into a pop spiral with this item.
    • If you start to pop-spiral, suicide your pop-eaters, then use use Wine of the Three Whips to recover. Pillaging and Book of Prophecy can help a little also.
    • If you still cannot avoid pop spiral, sell Altar or see the next section.

Recovery from zero pop

  • You will need geld reserves to maintain your kingdom and buy items while you prepare your recovery. Depending on circumstances, this could be less than 50M or more than 500M.
    • You may wish to switch to a stacking with little or no gold upkeep.
    • You can gain gold from pillage, Wish, and selling items.
    • Locate Artifact is extremely useful here.
    • LA skill will make your books and wines more powerful.
  • Obtain 50 Books and 20 Wines. It can be done with less, but don't take risks. If you have extras afterwards you can sell them or save them for later use, but if you don't have enough then everything is wasted.
  • Make sure you have enough farms and towns to support at least 350k pop. Weather Summoning helps; it is like having extra farms.
  • When you're ready, get favor from Nature god. If green, also cast Nature's Favor.
  • Use books until you have at least 150k pop, though more is fine. Then use wines to get back the rest. Pillaging can help at the end if you run out of wines. By 350k, your pop will begin to increase on its own
  • If you wish use any pop eaters, make sure your population has returned to its maximum first.

"Recovery started with 44 BoP and 20 wines. Used all 44 books, got like ...150k pop, and then used 8 wines. I'm on 350k pop now. I'm safe, for now. Edited in for clarification. Books gave me around 8k pop each." - User:t3h_flamee

As a white mage with LA 5 and Nature favor, I used 40 books and got to 219k pop, just enough for positive pop income. Then I topped off with a few wines. I could have done it with only 30 books and a few wines, I think. Carltsai 15:34, 7 September 2008 (CEST)
