Items with this ability allow you to call for pretty troops that will join your army and fight for you (the best they can) without needing to recruit and costing you no mana in the process.
Of course you'll still have to pay the upkeep once they're there. Using an item costs one turn.
Items on this category have their uses, but rarely you have to worry about them if you're still learning how to play...
