Two very important facts about archers are: 1: No Mana Upkeep. On non-oversummon servers, this allows you to have unlimited archers as fodder. On oversummon servers, they still allow you to have fodder without hitting the negative mana so hard. 2: They are ranged, so they don't get counter attacked (which makes them more useful than militia, pikeman and the like).
