You have to enter your last words and then click on the waving flag. You do not have to create a new mage. It gives you back your old mage with 100 nodes, 50 workshops, and 10 forts if your land was completely destroyed. Unsure about effects if your land was not completely destroyed and you merely lost forts. Everything else remains untouched, including item totals and uniques.
