This item gives the user a chance to acquire the most powerful 
Eradication Ancient spell in the game: Earthquake.
When you fail to learn the spell (big chance when you are not a mage) this can happen:

You finished using the item Book of Geology on yourself.
Also, If you fail to successfully cast Earthquake, it will drain all your mana.
