I am a green mage, at only 600 land, 150 guilds, Spell Level so far 197, no {{Blue}} [[Concentration]] on or what ever.

I bought a level 13 hero [[Sage]] (i.e. [[Researching]] (9) is at 13-(9-1)=fifth level).
 
* Just after bidding, to research an ultimate spell ({{Green}} [[Call Phoenix]]) from 0%-100% is indicated to take 715 turns
 
* Zero turns later, but after arrivial, with me sage, it is indicated to take only 565 turns to research it.

Researching does not affect the learning of skills. Tested by turning on and off.
  
Guilds reduce the amount of research points needed to attain a spell.  Does researching reduce the amount of research points needed, or does it increase your research rate?

Researching reduces the research cost to obtain a spell. An alternative way to speed op researching is to build more Guilds.

I bought a level 13 hero Sage (i.e. Researching (9) is at 13-(9-1)=fifth level). This is the effect (at 0% research progress):
